Networking and personal branding as a student might seem intimidating, but they’re essential for setting yourself up for career success. The key is to stay authentic and consistent while showcasing what makes you unique.

Defining your personal brand

Think about your values, strengths, and goals. What do you want people to remember about you? Craft a clear elevator pitch that sums up who you are and what you bring to the table. For example: “Hi, I’m Jules, a senior studying PR with a focus on social media strategy. I’ve worked on campaigns for brands like Target and love finding creative ways to tell impactful stories.”

Build your online presence

Keep your LinkedIn profile up-to-date with experiences, skills, and achievements. Use your headline and posts to reflect your brand. Other platforms, like Instagram or a personal blog, can help showcase your work or personality professionally.

Get involved in organizations or groups related to your field

Leadership roles, like being a director or team lead, help you gain practical skills and expand your network. Attend career fairs, panels, and networking events, introducing yourself to professionals and following up afterward with personalized thank-you messages.

Meaningful connections are the foundation of networking

Be curious and ask questions about someone’s career journey. Share helpful resources and stay in touch. Seeking mentors—professors, alumni, or supervisors—can also provide guidance and support as you grow.

Create a portfolio to highlight your work

Place all of your school and internship projects in one place to share at future networking opportunities. This allows people to see your hard work and skills being utilized in real-world application.

Keep building relationships, stay consistent, and always be authentic. Over time, these efforts will help you stand out and open doors to exciting opportunities.
